October 4, 2018 @ 5:30PM — 9:00PM
Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation invites you to celebrate our housing heroes during a special evening that will include a gourmet dinner, a silent auction, and awards presentations.
Funds raised from this event will support affordable housing and make it possible to improve lives through ongoing educational and social programs, financial education, food pantries, homework and reading clubs for children, and more. Your generous funds will create a ladder of opportunity that will lift up our entire community.
The evening will begin with a no-host cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., and the silent auction. The dinner and program will begin at 6:30 p.m., honoring:
Ellen Brokaw - Rodney Fernandez Advocate Award
Ellen has lived in Ventura County since 1954, when she moved to Ojai with her husband Hank. Together, they began Brokaw Nursery, one of California's largest suppliers of subtropical orchard trees selling more than 13 million trees and exporting to more than 45 countries.
Today, Ellen is president of the Brokaw Ranch Company, and has a long-standing interest in both the working and living conditions of agricultural workers. As the founding and current board member of House Farm Workers!, she has been working with a dedicated group of community activists to address the critical need for farmworker housing.
Dave Sabedra - Jaime Bordenave Professional Award
Dave began working with Jaime Bordenave in 1978 with the Cabrillo Improvement Association, the predecessor to the Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation. Dave's commitment has spanned 35 years on Cabrillo's Board of Directors, and he is currently serving as the Board Chair.
As a third generation Ventura County resident, Dave's passion for Cabrillo's mission is personal. His grandparents entered California from Mexico as migrant farmworkers travelling up and down the Central Coast. When his father was in his early teens, he joined his family working in the fields. Dave said he feels grateful that Cabrillo's efforts give hard-working families, not unlike his own ancestors, the opportunity to live in contemporary housing to solidify the family unit and provide a higher standard of living. Dave has been a commercial banker for 40 years, and is currently a financial analyst working in the agricultural lending division for Rabobank.
